YES - Young Energy Specialists against energy waste in cross-border schools

This project is implemented in the framework of Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine ENPI CBC Programme 2007-2013, Priority 4: Support people to people cooperation, Measure 4.2. Small scale “People to people” cooperation.
The overall objective of the YES Project is to increase the awareness and sustainability of energy use and reduce the associated carbon emissions in cross-border schools through a joint educational programme designed to teach secondary school students (13-17 years old) about practical energy management skills and their application to the schools. 
Locations of the Project are: Ukraine: Zakarpattya region (oblasts) and Romania: Maramures County.

Specific objectives

  • To increase teacher and school staff awareness and knowledge on energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and climate change and how to educate students about them
  • To increase awareness amongst students about energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and climate change, related skills and their applications to real life and change in attitudes and behaviours
  • To reduce energy consumption and related costs in project schools and set up a permanent energy monitoring system 
  • To equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for assessing the energy situation of their school and identify the most cost-effective saving opportunities through the creation of student led School Energy Management Teams
  • To create an educational programme and method that can be used as a framework for schools wishing to undertake similar actions
  • To facilitate cooperation and exchange of knowledge between schools in cross-border regions on energy issues
  • To pro-actively disseminate and communicate the project activities and results to support and encourage similar actions and behaviour in other schools and home environments

Target groups:

  • Representatives of the 2 project partners
  • Teachers, school leaders, students and their families from schools participating in the project from each partner region 
  • Collaborating institution, County School Inspectorates, education departments from municipalities

Estimated results:

  • 1 project implementation plan, 4 project meetings, control and monitoring reports
  • 1 training programme and training course materials for teachers
  • 1 training programme and training course materials for students
  • 1 training programme and training course materials for the school energy management teams 
  • 40 teachers trained in energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, climate change and educational methods on these topics who can transmit information to other colleagues and students outside of those directly involved in the project 
  • 600 students directly involved in the general sustainable energy training programmes 
  • 20 students forming 4 school energy management teams (SEMT) trained in how to conduct a detailed energy survey of the school and document their findings in a report
  • 4 energy audits developed by certified experts
  • 4 energy surveys of the schools conducted by the 4 SEMTs reflected in reports presented to the school’s senior staff
  • 4 Energy Management Plans for the participating schools
  • 1000 cartoon brochures for energy awareness  
  • 1000 leaflets with the project presentation
  • 4 Energy Performance Certificates displayed in the 4 participating schools
  • 4 Energy Monitoring Systems installed in the participating schools
  • 4 energy awareness campaigns targeting the students, teachers, parents
  • Energy and cost savings in the schools as a result of the awareness raising actions and implementation of small-scale measures 
  • 2 exchange events – Romanian SEMT (plus teachers) visit the Ukraine and vice-versa 
  • 4 partnership agreements signed between Romanian and Ukrainian schools and/or other educational institutions/departments establishing a framework for future cross-border cooperation
  • 4 Letters of Intent for future cooperation between partner organisations and other schools for implementation of similar actions
  • 2 dissemination and promotion events - kick-off event in UA and final event in RO

Main activities
Activity 1 - Project management and coordination of the activities, including reporting
