Testing digital tools for sustainable forest management with DIGIMEDFOR

NGO FORZA told about the DIGIMEDFOR project to the participants of the Round table "Ukrainian forests in the international context: risks, challenges, future", dedicated to the International Day of Forests, which in turn this year has a specific theme this year: "Forests and Innovation: New solutions for a better world".

The roundtable was held on March 21, 2023 in Lviv, organized by the NGO Forest Initiatives and Society.

The event brought together scientists, representatives of the expert community (foresters, ecologists) and forest-dependent businesses, as well as government institutions and agencies, who shared their thoughts, developments and experience on forest as a natural resource, habitat; forest as a commodity around which a whole as a commodity, around which a whole forestry industry has been created, where thousands of Ukrainian citizens are employed; forest as a crucial ecosystem.

About the features of digital tools and technologies for sustainable forest management, as well as the possibility of their testing by all interested parties was discussed by Ustych Radmila, an expert at FORZA. She spoke about the features of digital tools for sustainable forest management. In particular, she talked about the Trestima application which has been transferred as part of the DIGIMEDFOR project. Its testing in Ukraine has already started.

TRESTIMA is based on the mobile phone images and automated image processing. This application will be useful in planning and taxation of forestry activities, forest visits, and assessing the quality of inventory, made by other methods.

She also said that the next step is to test a tracking system based on the blockchain.  This is an effective system for tracking wood from the place of felling to the manufacturer of the product and then to the buyer, which will be relevant in particular given the entry into force of the EUDR Regulation.
